Alumni Spotlight: “Creativity Can Be Painful, but It’s the Good Kind”
In a recent FMU Focus Magazine alumni feature, Tyler Pate (’14) reflects on his journey from studying visual design at Francis Marion University to building a dynamic career in the creative industry. The article highlights how Pate’s freelance studio, The Creative Pain, embraces both the highs and lows of the artistic process — reframing struggle as a vital part of creative growth.
Since graduating, Tyler has worked as an art director, collaborated with major brands like Adobe, Wacom, POSCA, and Nickelodeon, and spoken at large industry events such as Adobe MAX. His work focuses on mentorship, mental health in creativity, and community building within the design world.
Pate credits his FMU education — particularly early experiences working with professors and travel opportunities — as foundational to his success, and he aims to inspire others to pursue their creative passions despite challenges.
